Petition to End Persecution and Prosecution of Women’s Rights Defenders in Iran
 Petition: To:   President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
Head of Judiciary, Mr. Mahmoud Shahroudi
Women’s rights defenders in Iran are experiencing unprecedented repression by the government.  The right to have peaceful gatherings – guaranteed by the Constitution – has been practically denied to women.  Those who have participated in peaceful gatherings in order to object to discriminatory laws against women have become the subjects of persecution, charged with threatening “national security”, summoned to the court, prosecuted, tried, and received prison sentences. During the past two months, 33 women’s rights defenders have been arrested and detained in Tehran.  Zeinab Peyghambarzadeh, one of the 33 women, was arrested on May 7, 2007, and immediately taken to Evin prison for not having been able to have the funds for a substantial bail.  Two more women have been arrested again after their initial release from temporary detention.  Two activists who spent 16 days in solitary confinement were released on substantial bail (200 and 250 million Tomans).   Six of the eight women’s rights defenders, who were summoned for participating a peaceful gathering on June 12, 2006, have received prison sentences ranging from 2 to 4 years.  Scores of women activists have been summoned to court, some more than once, for intelligence interrogations.In Tehran, the offices of three non-governmental organizations whose activities were related to the promotion of women’s rights have been searched and sealed.  Consequently, the activities of these three NGOs have ceased.  We are writing to you to express our dismay regarding the recent repression of women’s rights defenders in Iran. We respectfully ask your Excellencies to please:1. Acknowledge the rights of women to lawfully object to the discriminatory laws in Iran;
2. Acknowledge their right to have peaceful gatherings;
3. Put an immediate stop to the persecution and prosecution of women’s rights defenders and, inter alia, close their cases in the courts;
4. Immediately and unconditionally release Zeinab Peyghambarzadeh;
5. Annul all the issued verdicts and imprisonment sentences for women’s rights defenders;
6. Allow the three NGO’s to resume their operations and unfreeze their bank accounts.
